Welcome to the 2015-16 school year at Franklin Middle School. My name is Michelle Douglas and I am the PTA president for FMS. I have 3 children, 2 in high school and my third is in 8th grade here. I am a substitute school nurse for BCPS and often work in local schools including this one. My children have been through all aspects of this school, including the special education system and the GT route and everything in between. I know this school!
For the last couple of years, unfortunately, we have been spending more than we have earned. While we have a little money saved for anything that crops up, we can't continue to go on this way. Almost all of the money we get goes to the kids at the school. Last year we spent $6200 on cultural arts for our children, including science programs, motivational speakers and performers for each grade to expose them to another form of entertainment and learning. We spent $1500 on teachers, including a breakfast and a lunch. Which I'm sure everyone agrees they deserve. We spent $1387 on clubs, to offset the cost of equipment for those clubs, in which any child may be a member. We did not fund field trips. We gave $3000 to the 8th grade to help cover the cost of their fun day. All of our children get that when they're in 8th grade. We do have some legal fees and that amounted to about $650.
There are some things we will have to cut back on this year, which is unfortunate. Sadly fundraiser participation has been awful and membership was only about 210 people, including members where both parents joined and any teachers! We are trying really hard to help your children and I would urge you to encourage your friends and families to join the PTA and perhaps do a direct donation if possible.
